Weight distribution is your friend! If you tow a trailer with a total loaded weight of more than 3000Lb. you should read on.

Weight Distribution Trailer Hitches

The hitch weight capacity rating of your truck only tells part of the story. Many times the tow vehicle can be "overloaded" even if your trailer hitch weight does not exceed the rating stated by the tow vehicle manufacturer.

How is this possible, you might ask? Just think about all the bumping up and down your truck and trailer do when travelling down the road. That up and down movement can increase the loads on your trailer hitch and truck rear axle DRAMATICALLY. When rear axle loads are increased, front (steer) axle weight is decreased (not good).

That's where a quality weight distributing hitch comes in. As the name implies, it will help to distribute some of the hitch load forward to the front truck axle and some rearward to the trailer axles.

One example would be to move 200 lbs. forward and 200 lbs. back to the trailer, based on a starting hitch weight of 600 lbs. In the real world that may not always be possible but the closer you can come the better your towing experience will be.

When towing most larger trailers weight distribution, also called equalizer hitches by some, are usually a requirement, even if you have a "heavy duty" tow rig.

There is really no hard and fast rule as to when you will need to consider weight distribution. In general terms, if your trailer weight is at least 70% of your tow vehicle's weight and/or the trailer hitch weight is 70% of your truck's hitch capacity (without WD) it's probably time to look into this system.

There are several manufacturers of these load equalizing hitches. We carry Eaz-Lift (the inventors) Reese / Draw-Tite and Equal-i-zer brand hitches.
